2017 Still Life #3

5"x 5"  Original Watercolor - A Painting A Day
Still Life #3
$225.

Just working on my rendering... a bowl and
a copper pail.

My first show of the season is over.  It went
well.  This Saturday finds me in NJ at Christian
Brothers Academy in Lincroft.  For 30 years I
did their fantastic art show which no longer
exists.  Last year I tried their craft show and
many of my past clients found me!  Trying again
this year but I warn you it is a very crafty
craft show.  More info later in the week.

It has been an interesting week.  First this...

I received an email informing me that I was chosen to be included in the top 60 Watercolor Blogs.  I have no idea how they found me but I am listed as #6!  Just click the link below, a few moments after it comes up a screen asks you to log in, you do NOT need to, just click on the X in the top right corner and then you can scroll down.

Top 60 Watercolor Blogs And Websites For Watercolor Painting Artists

Then yesterday I was contacted by a fine art appraiser wanting information on six paintings that a notable private collector purchased back in 1988-1992.  They are being donated as part of a collection to Longwood University in Farmville, VA.

It all just makes me stop and ponder!

my house, a wood antique shoe form that is sitting
on my shelf with part of a crock and part of a plate.

This is our last free weekend and then my show

in Lititz.  Other than that not sure what are plans

This is a room in St. Nicolas Abbey, a plantation in Barbados.  I changed the view out the window to pay homage to the sugarcane and the windmills on the island.

The sun kissing the ocean...

How I apply to shows continued:    Other things to consider when applying to a show; number of exhibitors,  inside or outside (weather), number of days the show runs (1-4 is normal), hours of the show (some shows run into the evening), when is set up (the morning of the show or the day before (this has bearing on the number of nights in a motel), type of show (crafty or high end art).  Once Linda has set the schedule and applied we wait to see if I am accepted.  I have had my share of rejections!  Next is paying the booth fees.  You purchase your 10x10 plot of land for anywhere  from $100 to $800.  The money all due well in advance of the show!  I already applied and paid for shows in September and October!  You need a good cash flow. I hope you found this interesting and you have a greater understanding when I say "Linda is reading show apps" for the fourth day in a row!  There is so much more to it than meets the eye.

2017 Islands #8

4"x 6"  Original Watercolor - A Painting A Day
Islands #8
$225.
I got up early to watch us come into the port of St. Johns.
Left over clouds from an earlier storm and interesting
color in the clouds from the sun coming up.  Impressions
of the houses along the shore.  I did this one to please
myself!

I have several paintings from various subjects in various
stages of drawing and paint that Linda requested I "finish".
So that is my goal for this week!  I also have two large
paintings I need to finish.  Plus teaching classes on Tuesday
and Wednesday.  We only have two more weekends free and
then my show season starts.  Check my website to see
if I am showing near you!  Linda is waiting to see if I am
accepted before filling in a few weeks so keep checking.

How I apply to shows:    I thought you might be interested in how this all happens.
First, Linda pretty much picks where we go.  There are a few that we return to every year.  But we always add new one in new areas.
Most applications now are online, in the old days I received hundreds in the mail.   Linda starts with a tablet with every weekend across the top, and then under the dates she lists all the possibilities.  I think maybe she has a 15 hour driving limit but I question that! She picks a few because that is an area she wants to explore!  I know we are doing a new one in Saratoga Springs, NY and she just applied to one in Nashville, TN.  I mostly apply to juried shows, meaning you pay a $20-$30 jury fee and a committee looks at your images and decides if you fit into their show.  It is not a given that I get in!  Almost all of my shows now look at jpgs on line and have strict rules on sizes and presentation.  In the old days it was slides sent in the mail! Every application is different and asks different questions.  Most want an artist statement, sizes and cost for each entry.  All want a booth photo.  And there was one that wanted a photo of me working in my studio.  Linda also needs to read each application carefully. There are many rules on ratio of prints to originals, some do not allow prints.
I will continue this bit of information tomorrow...I want to cut a few mats tonight!

2017 Islands #7

4"x 6"  Original Watercolor - A Painting A Day
Islands #7
$225.

I went for a real stretch of my skills on this one.  It is from the NY harbor as our ship was pulling away.  Very architectural, night time and water.  For some reason it spoke to me and I simply wanted to paint it.  It will not appeal to everyone but I hope you at least see something in it!

larger painting

14"x 18"    Titles welcome!
It will be priced after it is framed.

I wanted to work on something a little larger.  Concentrating on  well rendered sky and water.

My February class started today.  Nice to have a full house again.  Linda spent her morning reading show applications.  We are trying a new to us restaurant, Gracies on Main in Leola for dinner tonight.
