This was from a snowman family.
Changed it to evening and changed the scarf, I actually looked at photos of how scarves draped around ones neck...  There is ALWAYS some study and practice in every painting.

My subjects are melting!   My mind is going towards Spring...

Thank you Nancy for the use of your photo to create this snowman.  A little artistic license was used.  I added buttons and changed the color of the scarf.

We took the time today to film the steps used in painting snowmen.

Thank you Sue for the heads up that this snowman was located on Spruce Street here in Lititz.  I took a little artistic license with him and gave him a carrot nose.  This one has a different body than my other ones.  Don't tell Linda but I am actually getting into it now!

The way you paint a snow man in watercolor is by painting the grey areas (positive areas or half tones)  allowing the paper to be the white snow.  It requires the artist to really study the subject and take it apart a bit like a puzzle.

SO... here is the story; Linda likes snow, she loves to shovel.  After this last snowstorm she gets the bright idea I should paint snowmen.  Personally, I am attempting to ignore the snow and my mind has gone to Spring!  However... a happy wife... you know the rest!  SO... here is a snowman and the deal is if it sells I will paint another one, however if not, I am moving on.  What a conflict, sell and earn money vs no sale and I will not paint more of them.  My fate is in your hands!
I combined several snowmen people sent me, trying to balance a realistic one and not get too cute.

Going for a landscape today...  interesting gate.

Thoughts:  We had a nice visit from an old dear client today.  She is not old!!   Just been a client for almost 30 years.   We had takeout lunch and chatted and I reframed her commission from 1993.  A fresh mat does wonders for an old painting.

I enjoy crocks.  Here are three with a fourth tucked behind.  All different shapes and colors.  A wonderful study.

FYI:  Today the phone rang and the caller ID said Pennsylvan Call.  So Linda decided to answer incase it was something important.  They said they were from Medicare and confirming the correct information because they are issuing new plastic Medicare cards.  I hear Linda agreeing with a few things and then she gets a bit agitated with the questions and the next thing I hear is,  "listen, if you are from Medicare you already have all the information you need and you can look it up" and the phone slams down.    She Googles it and its a scam.  Medicare is NOT issuing a new plastic card.  So be warned!  She is pretty much on top of things and still got pulled in for a few moments.  But it did offer a little excitement in a long Covid day!

2021 Still Life #6

4X6" miniature original watercolor - A Painting A Day
$225

This photo does not do the painting justice...
I am practicing my glass skills on this one.  A little challenge painting a clear glass and a dark amber glass. To make it even harder, the clear glass was setting side ways giving an interesting angle with difficult shadows.  Savings the white paper for the highlights.  Understanding what to paint in and what to leave out.

This is not just any basket... it is a South Carolina sweetgrass basket.  AND not just any sweetgrass basket...  Back in the early 1980's I did the Longs Park show and exhibited with Mary Jackson and her sister Yvonne Foreman, sweetgrass basket weavers.
At that time we splurged and purchased a basket, picking one we could barely afford. This one is by Yvonne (sadly not by Mary, if it was Marys it would be worth much more today!!)  Mary Jackson goes on to become a premier weaver (I mean BIG time!) I did many shows over the years with her. Yvonne stopped weaving, anyway I could not find much info on her.  While it would be nice if it had been one of Mary's baskets,  we still cherish it.

2021 Still Life #4

6X4" miniature original watercolor - A Painting A Day  $225.

I still have some pears hanging around so I put together another still life.  This time I grabbed a small green bottle and this lavender thing... ok I have been informed it is a lavender wand, handmade by our extra creative friend Lynne!  I just liked the color!

This is it till Sunday night, I need to spend a few focused days on my commission.

Thoughts:  We have several big show decisions to make and it is hard. Trying to balance the desire to get back to normal and the need to earn a living with being realistic.   We need to consider travel, hotels and restaurants.  At the show there are the crowds of people (who have been careful??) and the need of porta johns!  That is a big one!  Then consider sitting all day outside in the heat with a mask on...   Linda says if she cannot travel she should not be showing!!   ha ha,  the not traveling is finally getting to her.   SO, we made decisions, today we cancelled two of my big shows:  Penn State Show in July, I am sorry but the thought of thousands of college students at my booth....  need I say more about this one???  We also cancelled Waterford, VA.   we stay with a host family and that just does not seem smart this year and hotels are far away.  Also not going to my  favorite Shaker show in KY.  So basically we are going with only shows close to home for this year.  We will do a few of our own shows in our back yard, to be scheduled as soon as the snow leaves us!!

I am really shaking things up this week!  Todays feature is a window.  Thank you to a client who sent this photo from Chadds Ford.  Love the warmth of the light coming inside.  My favorite artistic part is the tiny lightbulb, I did it without white paint!

Anyone needing a Valentines gift, I am happy to help.  You have so many options!  You may visit the studio and pick out a painting or print, you can have something shipped, you can schedule a special commission,  or you can order a gift certificate.

SOLD!    $145. (unframed)
Available to the 1st person to email
(framing $35 - shipping available at cost)
If unsold by 2/11 the price goes to $250.

I bought pears yesterday, and thought I simply needed to paint them.  I paint pears often so I needed to put a little effort into a still life with something other than the pear.   I hunted through Linda's blue bottle collection and found a shape I liked.  So... pear with blue bottle!

We took Grandpa (Linda's step dad, he lives in our upstairs apartment) for a new stove, his died and we decided to replace his fridge at the same time since everything is now 20 years old.  I want to thank our salesman Pete at Martin Appliance in Brownstown.  He was kind, took his time with Grandpa, he listened and was not in a hurry and did not try to upsell.  If you are 86 it takes a while to pick out two appliances...

2021 Still Life #2

miniature original watercolor - A Painting A Day
 $275 Framed in black wood

Fruit on a platter... loved the harmony of color on this one.  I am guessing its clementines. I have been hanging onto this subject for a year and I cannot remember who sent me the original photo but I loved painting it.   I know I say this all the time, but with daily painting you just get better (more accomplished) and the paint just flows off the brush.   The pleasure for me is being able to relax and simply paint and enjoy the subjects without struggling to know how to paint it.
practice, practice and more practice.

Another uneventful weekend.  I worked on my commission, actually balancing two of them at the moment.   Watched several episodes of Zelda (married to  F. Scott Fitzgerald).  Linda made a great shrimp bisque and that was about all the excitement here.

Kindness...

I did not get a painting done today.  I spent most of my day at the Lebanon VA with my father-in-law.  He had his usual appointment plus his Covid vaccine.  A little time there reminded me how grateful I am, how blessed...   I wanted to take this time to tell you to do something kind for someone, a random act.  You cannot believe how that kindness will make someones day.  I am on the receiving end of kindness all the time.   So far this year clients and friends have dropped off little special gifts...

Thank you Lynne, she made this felted mat for Linda...

Thank you Jim, homemade fruitcake... ok, this fruitcake is no joke!  The only fruitcake I eat.

Thank you John, he has dropped off this fabulous coffee drink several times.

Thank you Lynne, you are the BEST baker.   I get a bag of the best shortbread several times a year.  And these biscotti were delish.  I don't think Linda even got  a bite!

You can see how happy these items have made me!  I try to pass on the kindness and I am challenging you to do a few random acts this coming week.  If you are stuck for ideas, Google Random Acts of Kindness Ideas and you will get lots to pick from.  The simplest things are a huge blessing to someone.

Meanwhile, I have a commission to work on all weekend.

I had drawn this chickadee last week and put him on hold then and decided to paint it for today.  A little different setting, hanging off a bird feeder.  I think I liked his little feet the best!   Just finishing up what was setting here unfinished with only 2 more to go.     I am itching to do some still life next...
