laid across the chairs.

Linda has spent the whole day saying
"I can't believe it is time to start showing"
but it is... she is gathering together all the
show supplies and paintings and we are off
to Lincroft, NJ on Friday.
Today's mail had a returned (undeliverable
as addressed, unable to forward) Open House
mailer that was postmarked November 4, 2011.
It was returned to me today, 88 days from the
day I mailed it... no wonder the Post Office
has issues. Where has it been for 88 days?

I really needed a change from all the landscapes I
have been painting. Love the color on this shaker box
and the patina on the table. Felt good to work on a
still life.

Just got home from our favorite theatre "The Allen".
Saw "The Descendants"... excellent.
With Netflix we finished the mini series
"Pillars of the Earth" excellent...
We are also in the middle of the 1st season of
"Downton Abbey".... also excellent.
Yes, I can paint while the TV is on!

I mentioned the other day that I felt you
could get so creative in placing my smaller
paintings around your house. Yesterday
we were with our friend who happens to own
several of my paintings and I took some photos
so you could see how she has placed hers.
I did not move any of them, this is how she
displays them and she often moves them around.

Another view of Gettysburg from last years
winter visit.
This is a great way to build an original
collection. Most of my clients are simply
propping them around instead of hanging them.

I finished my swan! This was from our friend
Joan's house and I loved the shadows. I will frame
it in a 22x20 frame. Not titled or priced... the paint
is still wet!

OK... I need to catch you up on the weekend!
Friday, Linda and I gave a lecture at the
Lancaster County Christian School about running
a small (very small!!) business and the arts.
So here I am sharing my wealth of information.

We get back out to the parking lot and the car
will not start. Had it towed and today found out
it needs a fuel pump...
This was the weekend of our annual get together with
two other couples that have been friends for years. (Last
year we went to Gettysburg - you can go to Feb 2011
to see the paintings from that trip)   This years trip was
to Alexandria VA. The snow gave us a late start and we had
a 2.5 hour drive but arrived in town by 11:30ish. Started
with a visit to the Torpedo Factory. If I lived closer I would
have a studio here!   Next was lunch at The Wharf and then
off to the George Washington Masonic Memorial... interesting.
I think there will be books turning up in the house about the
Freemasons. I will say the view from the top was wonderful
even in overcast weather. Off to our hotel to change for
dinner at La Tasca for tapas.   On Sunday we were out by 9am.
Breakfast at La Madeleine and then a 10-noon walking history tour.
Heavy into history but I loved it. The guide was excellent but
it was very cold!   Next is lunch at Red Rock where Abbey
and Ben and Kristi (the Linn's daughter who lives close by)
all met us for lunch. Very nice bonus. Then home...

Not much going on today except painting.
I spent most of my day working on a large
swan decoy still life.
Linda went to morning Yoga and was at her
desk in the afternoon. Dinner and back to the
paints.

My show schedule is on my website. Some shows
are waiting for acceptance, remember most of the
shows I do are juried which means you pay them
$10-$40 to look at your work and they decide if you
fit into their show. Linda is always looking around
for new good shows so feel free to send her info!

Painting and teaching... Tuesdays and Wednesdays
I teach two classes a day. Great students and each
class is fun for me. I added student photo's to my
Student Blog, check them out. My joy is in watching
each student finish paintings and watch them grow
as artists. We plan to have a student show here at

This was a borrowed photo from fellow artist
Debi Watson. She said it was a barn at Mountville, PA
and Rt. 30. Love the stone and deep doorway.
Bit of snow on the ground.

Linda was at her desk all day filling out show
applications. I painted this and did a sketch
for a rooster that Linda requested. I did not
give her too hard a time about it since it gets
me off the hook for winter paintings! It sorta
qualifies as winter since it was from the
"Farm Show".

We have the movie Moneyball to watch tonight.

This was from a trip to Inner Harbor, Baltimore
two years ago. I love the warm sun against the building
and snow piled on the ground. Good strong colors in
this one.

Friday we went to Chester Springs for a visit with
our friend Joan. Had a fantastic lunch, a drive around
the area (I did not have my camera along... lesson learned,
always pack the camera). We watched the 1st movie from
Downton Abbey and we are hooked so we added it to our
Netflix. And to top off our day I took Linda dancing at
Sunnybrook, in Pottstown, PA. they had a 50-60" DJ and
we danced till 11:00! Great day! Today I painted and Linda
was reading "Does the Noise in my Head Bother You" by
Steven Tyler. A library book that is due back Monday...
not my taste! So today was another great day.

This was a scene I found last week driving home
from NJ. It qualifies as part of my "Winter Series"
because it st a January scene. Not my fault we do not
have snow here! You can tell it is winter by the long
shadows, the color of the fields and the sky. Overall
I think there is a brisk feeling to the painting.

I am stalling a bit on my winter series, mainly
because I am not a big fan of winter! So in my
attempt to procrastinate I decided to take the
Daily Painters of Pennsylvania challenge, which
reminds me of summer! It had to be done...

I had my Men's prayer group at 6:30am, taught
a 9:30am watercolor class, ran a few errands with
Linda, painted, and now I am getting ready
for my 7pm class.  Meanwhile Linda is on day
three of closing out the year and catching up on
paperwork. How can there be so much accounting
and so little cash!!   Not to mention show applications
all over her office. I hear some muttering coming
from that direction of the studio.

I know I have not been as diligent as I should be with posting but I have been working! I finished
a commission which took up a large chunk of time
and received the OK yesterday. I still need to frame it.
I was asked to put together an exhibit at Chubbs
Group (Insurance) whoes world corporate headquarters
are in Warren, NJ. They have a beautiful corporate
gallery space. We did that on Thursday and spent the
night. It took two hours to hang 31 paintings but they
look great.

After 30+ years I still get a rush seeing my paintings
hung gallery style.

Today is Christmas but also my anniversary.
We are celebrating 32 years of wedded bliss!

We were married in our apartment with only a tiny
handful of family and friends.

This was our formal wedding photo!
Younger, thinner and more hair!!

4 years later, Christmas, 1 hour after midnight
(so it was actually 12/26/83) we had our daughter
Abbey. Born at home...Linda has this thing about
being home for all big events!

Tonight is our annual family Christmas dinner.
It started back in 1979 with us, my parents and Linda's
parents. Because Linda worked retail at the time
(Donecker's) we started the tradition of eating out on
Christmas Eve. In 1983 we added Abbey to the gathering.
Then we lost my Dad, added a great son-in-law, Ben
and now my Mom cannot venture out. This year Abbey
and Ben are away so we are down to four of us. Life
sure does change over the years.
Off to a great meal at the Lancaster Stockyard Inn.

I have had very little time to paint this week.
Monday we had a get together with our friends.
Tuesday we went to American Music Theater with
the family. Abbey and Ben came home on Wednesday.
We had our family dinner last night and the kids left
for Ben's family time. I worked on this one off and
on. It was from the Hudson, NY area, the yellow door
with the greens just stood out. My plan is to finish
one more Holiday and then move into a Winter series.

sightseeing trip last week.
A very old wagon filled with greens.

We are celebrating the Holidays with my in-laws
by spending time with them. Friday night we all
attended a live nativity. Sunday night was the
Community Choir Christmas service and tomorrow
is a day at Longwood Gardens. I think Linda is
expecting to get some more photos here. I think I will
run out of days before subjects!

This is a very nice landscape with a hint of
holiday!

Linda and I had a very nice few days in the
NY Hudson Valley area. We hand delivered a painting
to a good client and used that as an excuse to
sight see.   I hung my own painting on Ray's red wall
and it looked perfect there. We enjoyed our evening with
them. It is a privilege getting to know my clients.
After that we used the time to hunt for new subjects.
We did take a tour of the Vanderbilt Museum.
No photos allowed! We stayed one night in an
18th century Dutch B&B call the Stone House in Hurley.
I recommend it!   I took 400 photos so I am excited to
get to them. I am concentrating on Holiday themes
until Christmas. Then moving into the dreaded Winter Series.
If you have snow shots that you think I might like, send them
to me.   I am now going to cut glass to fill the frame order
that is coming tomorrow.

Washington, DC from our Thanksgiving trip to see

"a painting in two days"! This morning we helped our friends
John and Bonnie take her Dads things to an auction house.
It is so sad to empty a house from a lifetime of living.
Her Dad needed to go to a nursing home.

Next was a visit to my Mom, who was not in a good mood,
making the visit hard. Then home to focus on painting.

Holiday Mini Prints...

A warp speed day... 9am-noon was spent at Lancaster
Mennonite School demonstrating and talking about
an art career. Then a quick stop at my Moms, she fell,
she is OK but I wanted to check in on her. Home to change
vehicles and we were in Hershey by 2:00 for an early
show set up. It is now almost 8pm and we just got home.
Very little time to paint! So I am showing my Holiday
Prints. Available framed at $35 each or 2 for $60.

they make very nice hostess gifts over the holidays.

My first Holiday painting of the 2011 season!

What a difference a week makes. Open House was
very good and we are both glad it is over. We had
a lot of new clients and a lot of old friends stop in.
All the weeks of getting ready and its over and
everything is back in its place! No time to rest...
Linda is shipping orders and getting paperwork caught
up. I just finished a commission and I am back to my
painting a day pieces. My last show for the year is

Here is the run down...
Painting ~ done.
Framing ~ done and the studio is set up with
a large variety of prints. The porch is enclosed
and is all set up, that's the check out area. The
original paintings are all hung and labeled.
A good cleaning was done yesterday, including the
windows (note eye roll!) Plus our housecleaner
comes tomorrow for anything we may have missed.
My banner is hung on the porch.
Grocery shopping ~ done.
That leaves making the appetizers.
Here I am helping out in the kitchen... and you thought
all I did was paint! I am in charge of turning some
spiced nuts. A tough job, you have to watch the clock!

Tomorrow Linda's buddies come and help her
cook most of the day. Friday morning flowers
are delivered and the doors open promptly at 2:00!

Veterans Day

our porch. It gives us an extra room at Open House.

This is my Dad (1920-1997)

He was a Tuskegee Airman. When I look at this
photo I am shocked at how young he was. He
served at a time when it was pretty difficult for an
African American to serve, especially as a pilot.

Just framed this one and it looks great.

Linda started setting up the house. Panels are up.
Paintings are setting where they will hang, although
I learned a long time ago that Linda moves things
several times till she thinks it looks perfect. I still
have a show this weekend so I have half the supplies
with me so the rest needs to wait. Linda started
sneezing this afternoon, I think she is coming down
with a cold. Hopefully she can kick it over the weekend.
Picked up the wine today although I don't think Linda has
the hors d'oeuvres planned which is a big job. She is looking
for appetizers that are cold, finger food, able to set out for
3 hours without making my clients ill!!. So feel free to
email a recipe if you have something, she likes a whole new
menu each year. If it were up to me you'd be eating the same
thing as last year!

Something a little different. The subject fit the
odd shape. A little snippet of life.

We picked up a load of frames this morning so I
know tomorrow there will be a flurry of framing.
Actually, Linda informs me she is working on the
new prints. I also took a hour to do a family day
with my Mom. My brother also was there which
was nice for Mom to have both of us together.
Back to painting!

This was from a warm sunny day spent in the
Bedminster, PA ~ Upper Bucks County. We were
just driving past and the red barn popped right out.

I am painting. Working on some small ones for
a few days, just to fill in and for a change of pace for
me. Linda is working with our web guy to update the
website while she is multi-tasking in the studio. I saw
2 boxes ready for UPS so that means some orders are
rolling in. I also heard the framing gun for a few
hours this morning so I know there is more framing
being done. I think we are behind on the menu and
setting up the panels... but I am not asking!! Just going
back to my paints.

It takes 2 colors for one mat. Then each blank needs
the hole cut out ~ the opening for the print. Then the print
gets taped into the hole. Each frame has glass, a double
mat, the print, a barrier sheet, and backing board.
When all in the frame, each gets a dust cover, hangers and
wire. Linda likes to open the show with 5-7 each of my
43 prints. So right there is at least 215 frames. Plus 20-30 each
of the 2 new ones, plus 5 each of the 8x10 mini's.
So you can easily see where this is a several week job
with lots of steps. I paint...

I did take a break and visit my Mom. Took her out in the
fresh air for a while. Came home and washed the car.
And then we went to dinner with several couples we have
kept in contact with since all our kids were in high school
and ran track. Had a wonderful dinner at Ciro's.
Back at it in the morning.

Reliving Kentucky!

I painted most of the day. Took a short break
to take the new kitties to the vet for a check up.
Tonight I am cutting the mats for a few new originals.
I always get excited about this stage, paintings look so
much better when framed.

Open House Update:
All the new prints are hand signed and numbered,
causing cramps in my hand! Linda matched them up
with mats and frames. Frames for these come next
week. Linda was at her desk all day but I really do
not know what she was doing. I did see a few hand
written invitations on a pile...

I know... this is a bit different for me. It was
one Linda asked me to do. I usually do not
like Victorian but this turned out well, I liked the
perspective of just a glimpse into the room.
Linda was right, it is a great painting and was worth
the challenge.

So... snow in October. If you know me you know
the challenge this is for me. I was planning to go
into the snow season in a good frame of mind, but
I was not ready this early. I was at a show in Kutztown
and had to spend the night instead of driving home.
The poor plants in the garden took a beating and
Linda "had" to spend some time out there today!

Open House Update:
All the invitations are ready for the mail! They
go out on Wednesday, so keep an eye out for yours.

email me with your address.
I cut down 4 more cases of glass, Linda is using it faster
than I can cut it! I am signing my new prints tonight,
right after I am finished handing out candy for Halloween.

costume, after this we made each one!

This still life was another from my student Amy, who has

a wonderful eye. She has allowed me to use her photos

several times which is a privilege.

You have to wait till Open House for this one.

Open House Update:
Another order of glass and matboard came yesterday
so there is a flurry of mat cutting going on in the studio.
I started cutting down glass... a word of advice for all you
new painters... keep everything you paint and print to the
standard sizes. I never did and since we print in the same
size as the original I have all these odd size frames requiring
odd size mats and glass! Tomorrow will be a big day.
Linda picks up another order of frames, the invitations should
be delivered and the prints should also be delivered.
Thankfully I am leaving to set up for my weekend show in
Kutztown. It is nice being out of the house with all the
commotion going on!

This will be ready for Open House!

Open House Update:Linda stayed home this weekend while I did the show.
She claims she was working but I see signs of work done
in the garden! Although all 6000+ mailing labels are
printed and on her desk so she must have been working a
little. Today I went to my printer to watch the run
of my new prints, that is always a thrill.

I had a question: I was asked if I get sick of painting so
much or mind the pressure to paint for Open House.
I have always had a good work ethic. I always put in my
8 hour work day because in the early years Linda had a
regular job and I felt I needed to work as hard and long
as she did.  So I practiced self discipline and painting even
if I did not "feel" like it. I learned if I just sat down and
started something pretty soon the excitement would follow
or I would get into the challenge.   I added "Painting A Day"
a few years ago and that really focused me to starting and
finishing a miniature daily.   So I do not feel pressured
to create, it already is part of my routine.   There is pressure
of painting dynamite work, that pressure is somewhat self
inflected, I want to show a great collection of new work. I
want Linda to stand back when they are all on display and
tell me this is the best grouping yet. The thrill is in the
challenging pieces, creating them to the best of my ability.
The variety of subjects keeps me from boredom. Each new
subject evokes a fresh memory from where I saw it.   And
then there is this little thrill I get when the doors open and
clients are standing there and can't wait to get in and see all
my new work. And the greatest compliment is when
someone falls in love with one and must own it!
So... no, I do not get sick of painting!

Open House Update:
I gave the OK to the color on the prints so they are a go.
I will show you the new choices next week. Meanwhile,
I am painting, working on another requested painting
from Linda. Its looking really good, I hate when she's right!
Linda went to Miller Printing who is working on the
invitation. They are still playing with wording.
I have not seen it but she always does a good job.
I do know money is flying out the door faster than I am
bringing it in. Linda ordered rolls of kraft paper, we use
it to cover the back of each painting and print. An order
went out for hangers and tape and I see lots of paperwork
for mats and frames. It is better that I don't look around
Linda's desk! I was sent to the post office for 3410 stamps
which is not even half the order... you can do your own math!
I need to go back to my painting...

I had a good weekend in Blue Bell although it
was almost too windy to paint and demonstrate.
This weekend I am heading to Tyler State Park
Meanwhile...painting.

Open House update:
Stacy came all weekend to cut the piles of mats Linda
had put together. She still has 3 piles of 30 each of the
8x10 size to go. Lori was framing 40 ~ 8x10's and will continue

that tomorrow. Linda... I think she was playing with the

new cats but I am acting like she was working!
I do know she proofed the invitation. Today I went to the 1st
proofing of the new prints. I am looking at color, I want
my prints to match my original as close as possible. After
looking at it, I am having the color adjusted. I use Pemcor
in Lancaster so I can run out whenever they make an adjustment.
Years ago they printed Wyeth's prints. I like to imagine my
original laying aside of his on the work table...

Home news: we adopted 3 new cats from the Humane
League. Yes 3, however they have run of the house
and studio and may even go to the upstairs apartment
to visit the in-laws Here is "Gomez" a 3 month old,
already in a soft bed on Linda's desk... perhaps why
I think Linda got very little done today... Just a thought.

Open House Update...
Linda was cutting down mat board at 5:30 this
morning. There are huge piles setting around
waiting for the inside cuts. 30 ~ 8x10's are taped
and ready for frames, which come on Friday.
Order sheets are printed.
As for me...Painting...painting and painting some more!
I feel so sharp and energized, the paint is simply flowing.

Show Update...
The van is packed and the hotel is booked so I am ready
for Friday setup.

37 days till Open House 2011!

I know, I know, I showed you this yesterday, but frankly
I wanted you to admire it a bit more. To maybe gush
at how good it is!!

I am not the one counting the days, that credit goes to Linda!
I was told I had 37 days which sounds like a lot of time but it
flies by. I teach till the end of this month and have three
more shows so I need to organize what I want to paint in that
time. Meanwhile most of the other work goes to Linda who
seems to be panicking rather early and I'm not sure why!
She is on schedule, according to the schedule that is posted
by her desk, thankfully I do not get a schedule! The chosen
paintings are at the printer, after much thought and debate.
We are doing two this year but in a smaller edition of 200
each. I will share them later. Linda also met with the other
printer about the design of the invitations. Lori, our helper
cut the backing boards for the new prints today.
So I am thinking... ahead of schedule.
Meanwhile we need to pack for my weekend show.
I am in Blue Bell, PA for the PA Guild of Craftsman Show.
Linda is staying home to work so please come out and
keep me company, its OK to bring your checkbook along!

Demo from Saturday...

I worked on this all day Saturday. Now I am
ready for the table top and the basket that
is on top. This basket sets in a dark corner so
I do not need the same definition as the one on
the floor. But I still take time to paint every
piece. This has a tighter weave than the other
one. I am making the table top darker. Notice
the shadow on the wall.

I went a bit deeper on the wall. Darker washes
over the right corner.

I went a bit deeper in the colors, adding a few
more washes, using the same colors I have been
using only a bit darker.

OK... are you ready? I can't wait any longer.
Its finished and I love it.
It needs a frame, a title and a price.

Demo from the weekend

This past Friday I had my Studio open for
Porchwalk. I was demonstrating and talking
and finished the basket in my larger painting.

The Basket:
First I must be aware of the light areas where the sun
is hitting the basket and where the darker shadowy
areas are. As always I am starting with my warm
underwashes of cad. yellow. Drying between each layer
of color. I am working from the right side, dark to light.
Building up with yellow ochre and cad yellow slowly
on each weave. My goal is to keep it warm.

Next is the definition of the weaves. In the
horizontal rungs I used burnt umber and a dash of
red. Saving my light areas. On the top weaving
I used paynes grey and a spot of india ink for the darker
lines. This is all a slow process of building color and
texture.

I actually finished the painting on Saturday
and will share it tomorrow! I can say it turned
out unbelievable...

I am back from a wet weekend in Rhinebeck, NY.
We did manage a little fun. On Thursday we took
a tour of CIA, which made Linda dream of taking
classes! On Monday on the way home we stopped
in New Paltz to tour Huguenot Street. We realized
we had another connection, when in France, at
Meschers, we visited caves where Hugenots hid before
escaping... I took a lot of great photos. I don't know
how Linda finds these places but they always give me
great inspiration. Back home to paint. This weekend is
PORCHWALK, I am home for a change and will

be demonstrating. Porchwalk is held at 6 locations
in Historic Lititz, PA
Friday 10-5 and Saturday 10-5

My studio is stop #6 and I have 6 fantastic craftsman
for you to see!!

Back to my painting Demo...
I am moving to the floor. Again... starting
with a few warm washes of Yellow Orchre
(A favorite of mine!) Darker in the back and
working them lighter in the front. Use a mixture
of Raw Umber and blue with a touch of red
to add the lines.

Next is to go darker and add texture.
A mixture of Burnt Sienna, Perm. Rose and
a drop of India Ink. Notice the shaping of
wood grain, and I am saving some warm light
spots.

Thursday... demo: The lid

I added some character to the copper by
adding scratch and dents. A mixture of Paynes
Gray and Burnt Sienna in a drybrush method
meaning little water. Also finished the lines going
around the boiler with Cobalt Blue in the back part
and another mixture of Cad Yellow and Cad Orange
around the lines.
The most important thing is to keep some of the areas
warm and light, this is what creates the copper feel.

Now I am ready for the lid. Again, I am starting with
underwashes of Yellow Ochre but saving the negative
areas. This is what makes watercolors so hard. You
really need to understand where you are going. You
never use white paint so you save the negative parts.

I am slowly building color by adding more and

more Burnt Umber and Cad Orange. Notice

the wedge of reflected light that is created with
Thalo Blue and around these edges is Perm. Rose.
Next I needed to create the shadow areas. Going
over the darker areas with Paynes Gray and blue.
I simply keep repeating these color mixtures and
drying them until I reach the intensity I want.

times to enlarge it so you can really see what I am doing.

Wednesday demo update

Demo Update:
I worked till 11pm last night, just adding layers
And again most of today, inbetween teaching.

The goal is to make this look like copper by mixing paint.
Not by buying a copper tube of paint.
Notice I am still saving the light areas. I divided the boiler
into three parts. Mixing Paynes Gray and Perm. Rose
I washed the two ends and the very center, saving the the
warm areas. Across the middle is a raised pattern, to create
this, I used a blend of cad orange and Perm Rose. Next,
soften the edges around the highlights with water, lightly
blending.

I must give a shout out to my student Eileen who took some
awards from the Lampeter Fair... Congrats!! I am always
proud when my students do well.

September classes are over and October class starts next week.

Packed and leaving in the morning for a show in
Rhinebeck, NY. I love this area, I packed the tandem in
hopes of nice weather for a little ride. Our favorite diner is
there... The Eveready. We are using the pop-up and it is very
quiet at the camp area, hopefully Linda will get a little rest before
all the work of Porchwalk and my Open House.
The show is indoors so doesn't matter if it rains... I am all set

Great class this morning. This is the last
set of September classes, I cannot believe
how fast September went by. Linda and I
went to get our pumpkins in the afternoon.
Linda looks at the stems and I like the funky
odd ones. We need them to decorate for
Porchwalk. Back to my painting...

Demo: (click over painting to enlarge)

Underpainting... that is what I am focusing on, thin layers
of paint. Color that will give the wood a fine patina and
the copper boiler a glow. I am saving the areas that will be
lighter by simply taking my time and painting around them.
Basically, I am using mixture of Cad Orange and Cad Yellow.
You can see where it is painted in darker and lighter hues.
Next was a bit of paynes gray with a dab of red over the
table top. Patience...It looks nothing like it will when I am
finished... this is a slow build of color. I learned to enjoy
the journey of a painting not just the end result. There is a
joy in my knowing where I am taking a painting and a
patience in getting there.

My words of wisdom to painters... slow down, study your
subject, draw it to get familiar and form a plan in your mind
all before picking up the brush!

We returned from the show in New Hope at
10pm last night. I had high hopes for this show
and it did not live up to my hopes. It is unfortunate
because I really like the area. I was able to work
on my commission which has turned out nicely.
I want to spend about two more hours on it and
its finished. Linda is looking ahead to getting the
garden cleaned up for Porchwalk which is Oct.7-8.
I am actually going to be home this year, I will
be demonstrating so plan on stopping at the studio!
It is also time to start thinking Open House. Nov. 18-20
Linda has her "to do schedule" printed and taped up
in the office so I know I need to paint, paint, paint!

Below is my next large painting. A wonderful still life
with strong shadows. I think you will enjoy watching
the progress on this one. Feel free to send questions or
comments. Remember I hand draw my pieces. I like
that it is not perfect, there is a human quality to my work.
I get enjoyment from the drawing process. Ii gives me
an extra connection to my painting. Drawing requires me
to really look, to see all the intricate details. I have 5 hours
into just the drawing. I also started the backgrounds first washes.
First yellow Ochre ~ dried hard. Then Payne's grey around...
dried it, and where it needs to be warm, I added a touch of
Cad. Red.

Latest 14x18 painting
Untitled ~ It was from a trip to Harpers Ferry, WV
Linda thought it had a French feel, I just liked
the shadows.

I was not able to blog all week. I try really hard
not to give a lot of excuses but some weeks...
Monday: Home late afternoon from my Bedminster show.
Finally a good show! Put up the camper and unpacked the van.
Our last cat "Whiskers" who was 20 years old, died over the weekend
so we had a little funeral in the back yard and Linda
planted a Rose of Sharon in her honor. Takes a while to
dig a grave and plant a bush! I am guessing we will be kitty
hunting in a week or two...
Tuesday: I had a class to teach and worked on the painting
above.
Wednesday: I had two classes to teach
Today: I had a class in the morning, packed the van and
had a private class with a great lady who is in
her 80's. Her daughter brought her here from Pittsburgh
just to have a 2-day class with me.
In the middle of this I am working on a commission and started
another painting ~ I am in Open House painting mode.
Linda is having email issues, I have a leaking hot water heater,
and a leaking faucet in my in laws apartment.
Plus it is to rain for my weekend show!

This is week 2 of my classes, one of my students
had questions about painting sunsets so I did a study
in my sketchbook as a demonstration. Your sketchbook
does not need to be drawings only... I often add watercolor
washes to them as color reference. A sketchbook is
the perfect place to work out problems. Painting problems.
Although occasionally I will empty my heart of other
problems there also!

Statue Progress...finished!
Now that she is finished I can admit how much

I enjoyed painting her. She just glows. I do not
think Linda will part with her for a while. Needs
a good title.

see how I will have the show this weekend but they
tell me Chadds Ford area is fine... so I set up tomorrow
at 4pm. Spread the word that I am there!!

Challenge #23 - Old Door

This is another challenge from Paint and Draw
If you go to their website you can see the

door with a latch.

I sold a large original over the weekend and today
they told me they changed their mind. I was pretty
bummed, feeling down. Linda was on the Daily
Painters group I belong to and saw one of my fellow
painters lost everything in the Texas fires. That
put my lost sale into a proper perspective...

Statue Progress:I did work in it today and will post it tomorrow.
There was a question on how I "saved" the branches.
First I had pencil lines from my drawing, you can see
them from 8/29 and 8/30 blog post. So I knew
where my branches were. Because I have good brush
control I simply painted around them. You can see
that on 8/30. If you are a beginner you could use
misket or maskoid, a type of rubber that you paint over
where you want to keep white paper. Just do not let
it on too long or use it in the sun!

You may need to go back to August 30 to see
where I stopped. I washed thin layers of
Hookers Green and Paynes Gray, saving my
negative areas. Dried it, and repeated this step
four times, drying and building texture. Creating
darker and lighter areas. I also put some Paynes
Gray washes in the folds of the arm.

Next...I needed to create the impression of branches in
the saved negative areas. Using washes of Cad.
Yellow and a touch of Pthalo Green.
I also moved down to work on the roses and darkening
the greens in the foreground. She is sitting in a bed of
pink roses.
I worked bit more on the folds of the gown.

Wednesday night and Thursday morning class.

I spent most of my morning cutting white and
black mats for framing. It took a while because
I do not do them often. Then it was off to visit with
my Mom. I really did not have any painting time.
I may try to paint tonight.

Meanwhile the framing is finished and we have
most of the prints in new black frames. Tomorrow
we pack and then go set up.

I did not have any painting time today.

Dealt with an electrical issue, the borough
came to change all the water meters. I ran
a few errands and suddenly its dark...

Linda was working on framing the new black

frames. The plan is to have one of each ready
this weekend for Heart of Lancaster Show.
I think they really look fresh and up to date.
The photo is not the best since I took them outside.

Just to compare.. the new black on the left and our

standard shaker walnut on the right...

It is amazing how different a frame can make a print look.

Shaker Still Life #18

I was just at the Shaker Village so I have lots
of new Shaker subjects to paint. You know I
love them!!

I got a new pair of glasses and everything seems
so much sharper and brighter. I think it even
reflects in my painting.

Another fast day... I put the final coat on my
windows on our cottage. Playing handyman
is not my best role! Then I was off to market,
then pick up the order of black frames. Linda
plans to have a full display for this weekend at
Heart of Lancaster Arts & Craft Show in Manheim,
PA. Paint my blog and dinner with the family.
Then off to the hospital to visit one of my favorite
students, in hopes of cheering her up. After the blog
I have glass to cut down... I think it will be a late night!

Statue Progress
I am simply taking my time and filling in the
background washes. The key is to let it dry!
Slow down and enjoy the process of building
the color. The 1st wash on the top is finished
and I am working on the greens.

Shaker Still Life #17

I really do not know what these numbered
boxes were used for... I just liked the look.

Busy day... I painted our cottage windows,
picked up 3 bags of wind blown debris from
our yard, mowed, painted my blog, and managed to
talk Linda into riding our tandem. We took
it out to Middle Creek and did about 8 miles.
It was a beautiful night, saw 2 deer, a heron,
and the eagle.

Statue progress...I started laying in my under washes. The background is

very dark. Some artist go right to a blackish wash, I
prefer to have more depth with dark and darker areas.
That requires several under washes. You will see how
I build it as I go along. She is setting among bushes and
pink roses... again, I am building my greens.

Backyard sunflower

Linda has 3 huge tall sunflowers growing;
reaching towards the sky. They are so dramatic
at dusk and they have been calling me to paint
them. I was painting this when the 5.9 earthquake hit!
I found myself rocking in my chair with my brush
dancing across the flower!

Today an earthquake and Hurricane Irene on the weekend.
We are scheduled to be in Norfolk, VA. I say rain or shine
but take exception to hurricanes! So the show is currently
up in the air.

Below is my latest statuary painting. This is a request
from Linda and she is making sure I get the "look" she
wanted. So I am treating it like a commission, but have found
I am really enjoying it. I love portraits and this is a great
substitute. I sketched it in my sketchbook and then onto my
watercolor paper. I had the face wrong the first two times.
To angular, she wanted innocent angelic...which is how
the actual sculpture is but hard to capture. Third time was the
charm. I started painting the face to make sure it was perfect
and Linda is smiling, the hardest part accomplished! I finished
the rest of the drawing and here is the first stages.
Linda has this knack of always stretching my skills.
I think you can click over it to see it better.

2011 Sunset

A little water study. I liked the tree branches in the
foreground and the twinkling lights in the background.

Since it rained, no... poured at pack up yesterday at
Mount Gretna. I had taken out the paintings but left
everything else. So this morning we went back to pack up.
Everything had dried out saving me from putting it up
in the back yard.

But I started this while she was busy

I just had to do something from the Shaker Village.
I have tons of new photos just crying out to me to
paint them! Not exactly sure what this is but I liked
the unusual tin shape. A grain scoop maybe??

My Angel Statuary from yesterday was chosen as
one of "Rosa's Picks" for today!! It is quite an honor
to be chosen out of all the art blogs out there in
cyber space.

Meanwhile Linda is experimenting with new black
frames. Wow, they are making the prints just pop.
Gives this contemporary sharp look to my work.
She will have four on display at Mount Gretna this
weekend and will be taking orders. They are being
framed tomorrow so I will photo them for you to see.

Angel Statuary

As you know we have been visiting cemeteries
to view the sculpture. There are some beautiful
pieces there. Linda has been after me for a while
to paint a few and I had been dragging my feet.
Mostly because it was something I had never done
and required some thought on my part. So yes, I am
out of my comfort zone! I needed to think in
monochromatic terms and make concrete look 3D.
This is my first attempt. I also have a large one
started. I will show the drawing when I have it
completed.

Plan on attending the Mount Gretna Show
this Saturday and Sunday... more info to follow.

Hello from Kentucky...

After setting up for the show we had two free tickets to
walk around the grounds of Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill.
Here I am taking photos that will be used in my next masterpieces!
I LOVE this place. Could there be a better setting for my
paintings??

After 2 hours of photo taking we went in search of
a restaurant featured in Guy Fieri's Diners and Dives.
Wallace Station in Versailles, KY. Excellent sandwiches!

Afternoon at Chanticleer

packed the van and visited my Mom.
We are off to Kentucky, no not a vacation.
Tomorrow we have an 11 hour drive not counting stops.
Set up the camper and crash. Friday is set up at the
show then we have a bit of free time to walk around
the Shaker grounds hunting for new subjects. Saturday
and Sunday we show all day and Monday drive 11
hours back home...
I know, you are wishing you could go along!!

Part of the purpose of my blog is study and
my own growth as an artist. Lately I have been
interested in angles. If you look back a few posts
you can follow my interest. Looking at subjects
from up high and down low. How the vantage
point changes ones perception. I challenge you
to look around, pay attention as you walk up and
down steps, notice how objects change.

I actually worked on todays painting on Saturday
at the Lititz Art Show. Abbey and Ben were
home for a few hours yesterday so I basically
goofed off. Today was spent on household stuff
and a dentist appointment. I have something a bit
different in mind for tomorrows blog...

Cleaning out a drawer...

I think these were returned from a gallery at one time and
placed in the drawer for safe keeping.
Original Price: $60.00 This is a hard to find print and has
basically been sold out since 1999!
4 color offset lithographs ~ All in excellent condition
A beautiful print which can be framed country or very
contemporary. Worth a second look!

We have had a busy week sharing vacation time with
friends. We did some fun, very different day trips.

Monday: A trip to Philadelphia, starting the morning at
Eastern State Penitentiary. We were there several hours
touring the old prison. Very interesting, you use head
phones for your own tour. Lunch at Jacks Firehouse,
excellent! Then the afternoon at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
Walking around looking at stones and sculpture. Not
as exciting as the one we go to in Ohio but interesting.

Tuesday: Off to Harpers Ferry, WV. We scheduled a
fantastic tour with Rick from O Be Joyful Tours.
Rick was in period costume and had a great sense of
humor. He made every effort to keep us in the shade
while giving us the historical background of Harpers
Ferry the town, John Brown and then the towns role in
the Civil War. I cannot say enough about this tour...
EXCELLENT. So much better than walking around
the town reading plaques.

I spent every other free moment working on my commission.

Angles Study

I have been wanting to paint this for a while.
I was interested in the unusual angle. I found it
walking up the huge wide staircase at the Shaker
Village. As you reach the top a large landing
opens up to you. Everything from this viewpoint
is a bit distorted. I liked that!
Part of being an artist is taking the time to observe
how things change from different viewpoints.
Even if your not an artist, you should slow down and
look around you, we miss so much!

This bottle turned out very well. A good
simple still life. A nice way to get back
into the swing.

I must confess that even in the heat I have
been riding bike. Last night a group of us
rode 39 miles and I rode again this morning.
No show this weekend and with the heat I think
that's a good thing. I am diligently working
on a commission which I want to finish by next
week. I have several hours into the drawing
and am ready to lay on some paint. If I get
permission from the client I will share the painting
steps.

HELLO Penn State!
It was a long day. We were up early and out
of the house by 9:30. Drove to State College.
Set up our camper, it will be home for
5 nights. Then out to the show.
Our booth is mostly set up, need to
hang the paintings in the morning, that's Linda's
job.
FYI: We are much farther down Allen Street
than I thought. Actually near the corner of
Allen and Fairmount Ave. #A56.
I will be ready for all of you at 10AM.

We are not just setting around with our feet propped up!
I had a few repairs to our pop up camper, a little patch on
an air mattress, another visit to my Mom, an emergency repair
to a neighbor kids bike, a few long bike rides for me! While
Linda was at her desk for days still catching up. We need to
pack for Penn State tomorrow. So I will be out of touch till
next week unless I have Internet connection at the campground.

Shaker Series #13

1) The main source ~ the window
2) The ledge under the chair rail
3) The warm light on the floor
4) The cool muted light in the foreground.
For me, light is everything.

A window in Murano, Italy...

We have been on the road 27 days! 2 weeks in Ohio,
a week in Kentucky and a week in Massachusetts.
I am glad to be home. Linda could have kept going
but I had enough. We got in last night. Unpack the van,
unpack the camper, 4 loads of laundry, the grocery store,
a visit with my Mom, dinner with Linda's parents, a few
moments in the yard and its night time.
No show this weekend. I have a commission to work on
and get back in the swing of painting blog pieces.

Wednesday check in...

We had a bit of van trouble in KY. The brake line
cracked. No one works on Sundays and we could not
even rent a car to get to the show. Bummed a ride with
another artist and a kind client took us back to our hotel.
Got it fixed on Monday, went to the show to pick up our
stock and then had an 10 hour drive home! A very long
Monday. It is important to look at the good when life
whips you around. The leak happened in a parking lot
NOT on the interstate. Wonderful people helped us out,
and we made it back home with no other problems.
A major inconvenience but not a tragedy.

Laundry, unpack, repack, visit my Mom, get the camper
aired out and ready... and we are off again! So glad we have
house sitters, the lawn is mowed the house clean, the plants
watered. Linda was able to putter in the garden for two day.
Tomorrow we drive 5 hrs and set up the camper and have
a relaxing night. Friday is set up at the show.

We left our friends house at 6am this morning.
After two weeks together it was hard to say
goodbye, we had a great time. But it was back
to work. We had a 5.5 hour drive and then a
few hours to set up the booth.

I am back to the Wilds!
This one is featuring the vast sky.

My last bike ride in Ohio this morning, 33 glorious
hilly hard miles at a fast pace. I am riding with
Bruce and a neighbor who are younger and thinner
than I am , by a lot! A perfect last ride.
Lunch at Melt Bar and Grilled and then the Holden Arboretum
for the day. It has been a fast two weeks with our
friends and we are not ready to leave. But I have
a show in Midway, KY this weekend. We have a
6 hour drive and set up tomorrow.

Sunflower at Lucky's Cafe

While having lunch at Lucky's Cafe yesterday

we found this little sunflower growing in
their garden. Linda insisted I paint it even though
I am immersed in the Wilds series! But the yellow
flower was a nice change from all the greens I was

painting.

No bike ride today since Bruce had to go into work
early. I got right to my painting. The girls went to
a garden center in search for a special clematis
plant. A wonderful dinner together and we are off
for ice cream! Only one more day here in Ohio then
its off to Midway, KY.

Going Wild #3

The third in my "Wilds" series. While they are
not getting a lot of attention, I am totally enjoying
myself painting them.

My buddy Bruce and I started our day with a 26 mile
bike ride with 4 nasty hills through the Cuyahoga
Valley National Park. Then we were all off to
Lake View Cemetery to see the Tiffany Chapel.
This is our third visit and loved it as much as the first time.
If you find yourself in Cleveland, Ohio make this a stop.
It is a treasure. Next we were off to Lucky's Cafe for lunch.
Another one of our favorites.
